                (Of Matriculation/ Xth standard level)

Paper-II
                  General Studies–I                                                                250 Marks
                  (Indian Heritage and Culture,
History and Geography of the World and Society)

Paper-III
                  General Studies –II                                                              250 Marks
                 (Governance, Constitution, Polity,
                 Social Justice and International relations)

Paper-IV
                General Studies –III                                                                250 Marks
                (Technology, Economic Development,
                 Bio-diversity, Environment, Security
                  and Disaster Management)

Paper-V
                General Studies –IV                                                                250 Marks
                (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)

 Paper-VI
                Optional Subject – Paper 1                                                     250 Marks

Paper-VII
                Optional Subject – Paper 2                                                     250 Marks

Personality Test                                                                                       275 Marks.

                                                  Grand Total                                           2075 Marks

 3.   That means , this year there will be 4 paper on General Studies having 1000 marks and two papers of single Optional Subject worth 500 marks. Therefore, giving double weight-age to General Studies.

4. Moreover, paper 1 now will have English Comprehension and Precis writing along with Essay, and the marks of Comprehension and Precis writing will be included in the final result. Definitely, it will put pressure on non- English background candidate, but that can be overcome by regular practice.

5. In General Studies paper-1, the syllabus includes History and Geography, but the dimension of which is very wide, not only History and Geography of India is important, the candidate has to read  World History and Geography also. Moreover, Contemporary History is also important for this paper.

6.  The General Studies paper -2 consists of not only syllabus of polity of previous years but more stress is on some aspects of Public Administration and Sociology. Further, The syllabus framers of UPSC and DoPT have put more stress on Social Justice and International Relations, which is the need of the hour.

7. The Contemporary Issues like Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management are put together in the General Studies paper -3. With the less emphasis on them in the older syllabus, this time UPSC has done some justice to these subjects by giving some importance and earmarking separate paper. This is a welcome step.

8. The new paper, General Studies paper -4 is a real surprise to many of us. Of course, we are expecting some thing that will help in judging the candidate for Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude for Civil Services.  But a whole paper for that is something big. We do not know, how paper setter will do that. There must be some situation based questions in that paper. We are expecting for some sample paper on this subject.

9. The biggest change is that UPSC has done away with One Optional paper. Now candidate has to chose One Optional paper instead of two.

10. Moreover, any candidate opting for Language as the Optional paper, that will be possible only if the candidate has graduated in the literature of that particular language.

If we look into these changes, a bold step has been taken by UPSC and DoPT  to make these examination a level playing field for all candidates. And it is the need of the hour to introduce recommendations of Alagh Committee Report, Second Administrative Reforms  Commission report and Prof Arun S Nigavekar Committee report.
But still, lot has to be done for making a syllabus that will be same for all the candidates.
