Land Acqusition Act, 1894 and Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, 2007 are talk of the political gallery for the last 30 days. Suddenly all parties are worried for farmer's interests. So, actually what are these laws and the controversy surrounding is given below.
According to Land Acqusition Act, 1894, the goverment can acquire private land for public purposes. As defined in the act, Section 3(f) "public purpose" means building educational institutions, town or rural planning, residential purposes to the poor or landless. Moreover, it also include that land can be acquired for any premises or building for locating a public office, but does not include acquisition of land for companies.
Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, 2007 which seeks to amend the 1894 Act and guarantee market price for acquired land. It also makes provision for social impact assesment studies of the development project and costs related to the resettlement of the displaced masses.

On the birthday of legendary Hockey player Dhyan Chand, President Pratibha Patil conferred Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dhyan Chand, Dronacharya, Tenjing Norgay National Adventure Awards at the glittering ceremony held at Ashoka Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
Saina Nehwal is the lone player chosen for the coveted Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2010. Whereas as many as 15 sportspersons were named for the prestigious Arjuna Awards for their achievements in their chosen sport and 3 for the Dhyan Chand Awards for their lifetime contribution to sports. 5 coaches were named for the Dronacharya Awards ,4 Tenjing Norgay National Adventure Awards and 4 organisations for the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar, given for the promotion of sports.
The awards were decided by two panels comprises of eminent sportspersons and sports administrators; one headed by P T Usha for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and Dhyan Chand Awards and the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar and the other by former hockey player Ashok Kumar for the Dronacharya Awards.

The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is given for spectacular performance in the year under consideration; Arjuna Award for consistently outstanding performance for three consecutive years preceding the year of award; Dhyan Chand Award for life time contribution to sports development; and Dronacharya Award for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events in past three years.
Apart from a medal and a citation, the winner of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna will receive a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh. Arjuna, Dhyan Chand and Dronacharya Awardees will receive statuettes, citations and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each. The recipients of Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar will receive trophies and citation.
Arjun Atwal scripted history by becoming the first Indian and just the sixth Asian-born player to win on the PGA Tour when he lifted the Wyndham Championship trophy in Greensboro (USA) on Sunday.
Today, Union Service Public Commission (UPSC) has announced the result of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2010 held on May 23, 2010.
The result is available on the UPSC website. And the successfull candidates have to apply again in the detailed application form, which is available on the UPSC website.
Candidates have to download the form and send it to the UPSC duly filled in in their own handwriting for admission to the Main Examination scheduled for October 29, 2010.
Moreover a copy of Detailed Application Form shall also be sent by Post to the successful candidates by the Commission. In case any of the successful candidates does not receive a communication in this regard from the Commission by September 8, 2010, he/she should immediately contact the Commission.
The result of Roll Nos. 256401, 275422, 340989, 551300, 551460, 548579, 275875, 288037 and 402112, has been withheld, the release added.
